Hello

This is an internal research project by Rattle Research into teens and shared gaming.

What?

There has been a lot of research done on the possible educational benefits of gaming, game design, the psychological effects of gaming and controversy around how gaming promotes violence. We are interested in the way gaming is shared by teenagers. We want to know how and why teens play games in groups. What are the drivers for group gaming? Why do strangers come together to game with each other? What are the perceptions of those who game? What are the spaces in which teens game? What is it about shared gaming that sets it apart from other spaces of group participation?

How?

It's going to be an open, transparent research project. I'm going to post about what I've been up to, my methods, the things that went well, the things that didn't go so well and I'd really like it if you could feedback and add any comments.

Why?

Research tends to be something that is done behind closed doors, researchers are generally afraid to expose their methods for fear of being undermined. Why should research be a closed discreet process? This research is ongoing, open and discursive. However, by the end of the summer we will publish our findings and provide a document that is available for download.
